                            - This paper introduces an effective formulation for protection of power systems using a minimum number of traveling wave detectors. The system of equations derived has been made linear, with no approximation involved, through an innovative change-of-variable technique. This step-change removes concerns about convergence speed and the multiplicity of solutions obtained, which were a common drawback in all previous methods. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that the proposed low-demand method can be used for high-speed protection of future multiterminal dc systems, irrespective of their sophistication or meshing of topologies.
