- Recogito 2.0 is an online platform for semantic annotation: i.e. the marking up of text, images or tabular documents with references to controlled vocabularies, and especially gazetteers. Its primary function has been to investigate ways in which humanities practitioners (including classicists) can link data conveniently and without prior technical expertise. It was entirely redesigned from version 1.0 as part of the Pelagios 6 & 7 projects (2016-17; 2018-19, PI: Leif Isaksen). These explored the research and pedagogic potential of semantic annotation as a social practice, rather than a lone one. To create an environment in which collaborative annotation practices could be evaluated, Recogito was rebuilt as an online platform providing users with a workspace through which to upload, organize and share texts, images and data, for individual or collective annotation and interpretation. Throughout the development process we conducted 31 tutorial workshops in order to elicit feedback from researchers, educators and students. Research findings were presented at more than 58 international workshops, conferences and seminars, and in 3 publications. Innovative components include: i) supporting a broad range of data formats and export options, such as TEI and IIIF, in order to facilitate larger technical workflows; ii) supporting multiple Named Entity Recognition algorithms and gazetteers for application in diverse historical and/or linguistic contexts. The value of these developments is reflected in Recogito?s uptake worldwide as a practical tool for humanities research, two international awards, and frequent citation as a leading example of a Linked Data tool for humanists. Recogito is in active use for a diverse range of academic research projects and educational institutions worldwide, and increasingly embraced as a collaborative teaching tool in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. It has been the direct or indirect subject of at least 14 publications by third parties.
