- Martin Heale is the sole editor of The Prelate in England and Europe, 1300-1560, as well as the sole author of the books introduction (pp. 1-13) and the chapter Monastic Attitudes to Abbatial Magnificence in Late Medieval England (pp. 261-76). The volume arose from a conference held at the University of Liverpool, organised as part of Heale's British Academy Research Development Award project on the late medieval abbot. The aim of this event was to explore the theory and practice of high ecclesiastical office juxtaposing cardinals, bishops and monastic superiors in late medieval England and beyond. All of the speakers were invited by Heale to take part in the event, and Heale was then solely responsible for the conceptualisation of the volume, selecting appropriate contributors, reading drafts and providing them with clear guidance to ensure a consistent analysis throughout the text. The copy-editing, proof-reading and indexing was carried out solely by Heale.
