                            - This paper introduces an affordable platform for gastroesophageal cancer screening in rural areas of low-income countries. The innovative actuation principle, based on three independent waterjets for steering the endoscope tip, guarantees dexterity at an ultra-low cost of components, and was patented (WO/2016/040451). This platform led to an EPSRC GCRF award (EP/P027938/1, £1.6M) to develop endoscopy in rural China, an NIHR award (16/137/11, £2.0M), and a Royal Society grant (CH160052, £100,000). The research won the Surgical Robot Challenge award (£7,000) at the Hamlyn Symposium of Medical Robotics 2016, and was reported on the BBC (‘Look North’, 20th November 2017).
