Designed and built by Ambrose Gillick and Lee Ivett through their practice Baxendale, Raising the Roof was a small-scale, temporary intervention for the community-based Portland Inn Project, based in Hanley, Stoke-on-Trent, led by artists Anna Francis and Rebecca Davies. As co-director of Baxendale, Gillick was central to the design and manufacture of the work and has subsequently written and spoken about the project for academic and public audiences. Adopting a research-led design approach, Raising the Roof modelled concepts of spatial prototyping, situated practices and critical ethnographic methodologies towards a situated sustainable architectural model, deployed around an overarching theme of the coproduction of urban space. The project enabled Gillick to develop and test research themes and ideas in community-based participatory research, and proposed three critical questions: How can small-scale and incremental architectural interventions support longer-term, sustainable community growth in the Portland Street neighbourhood of Hanley? How can a situated practice approach be utilized in both the socio-cultural and geographical context of Portland Street, Hanley and the Portland Inn Project? How does the production and use of Raising the Roof demonstrate an innovative methodological approach for design and research in similar contexts? Made by Gillick and Ivett using basic construction techniques from commonly available materials - scaffolding, planks, corrugated metal and plastic and fixed with bolts and screws - to demonstrate the possibility of design as an instrument of capacity-building to the community within the context of normative practices and everyday life. Raising the Roof advanced on other contemporary examples in the field in the depth of its engagement, in its ethnographic performance and in its role as a mechanism for coordinating a transdisciplinary encounter with the social, cultural, material and governance context. The work was shortlisted for a national design award and featured in the architectural press. The project is ongoing.
