                            - Provides first formal framework dealing with mathematical discontinuities in free-form deformations (FFD) for image registration. Builds on a key observation widely disregarded in the community that such discontinuities are omnipresent in tissue-tissue transitions (e.g., myocardium-blood, lung-ribs, etc.). Demonstrates imposing continuity/smoothness ubiquitously across transitions leads to artefacts/increased errors near the discontinuity/interface potentially masking diagnostic information. Key contribution borrows from eXtended Finite Element Method (XFEM). The significance is considerable as non-rigid medical registration is central to most critical image-based diagnoses and therapy guidance whose results are otherwise invalid.
