- A study of the historiographical works of the Hospitaller Nikolaus von Löwen, situating them in the context of literary production in late medieval Strasbourg and arguing that they respond to a crisis in the legitimacy of the Order of St John in that city. The second half of the article uses this case-study as a basis to criticize the basis on which the study of 'urban historiography' in medieval Germany has been undertaken and to propose a new model for all future work in the field.<br/>
