- This co-edited book presents historical, theoretical and practical aspects of information design, drawing contributions both from leading researchers and practitioners in information design and from new researchers who will carry the field forward in the future.
The editorial role was shared equally between Black, Lund and Walker; Luna designed the book.
It aims to present information design as a distinct design practice in which design responds to the demands of presenting (often) complex information, the needs of users for clarity and ease of access, and the constraints and opportunities of the technologies of information provision. The book covers application areas from scientific explanation and diagramming, through the design of text for legibility, navigation and comprehension, multi-media document design, the design of symbols and warnings, wayfinding and the design of exhibitions, to the design of instructions, particularly in healthcare settings. Across these areas, systematic approaches to understanding the context for design, gathering user input, trialling and refining solutions iteratively can be seen.
The book has been designed for both print and e-publication, in both cases ensuring that written narrative and illustration work together to support the reader’s comprehension and navigation.
