                                - The methodological innovation of a borderland perspective used in this study necessitated a complex analysis of the politics of space and belonging. It was thus an interdisciplinary exercise considering critical approaches from political geography, political science and international relations, with a focus on border studies. The 8-year project involved fieldwork interviews, conversations, participation in activities and the collection of primary data (1/2 visits a year, 2009-14) in the Kashmir Valley, Ladakh and the less-researched areas of Gilgit-Baltistan and Azad Kashmir. Access to some areas was highly restricted, needing lengthy procedures to secure permissions, and political circumstances sometimes affected travel plans.
