- Fashionability, Exhibition Culture and Gender Politics (2020) focuses on the Victorian Fair Women exhibition, to reveal the important, unacknowledged, contributions that women made as exhibition visitors, organisers / curators, collectors and patrons. Drawing on extensive new primary research, conducted in archival collections in the UK and USA over the period of a decade, this 199-page book’s sources include unpublished materials from the V&A, Tate and National Portrait Gallery, as well as a considerable number of newspapers and periodicals. The book argues that, while invariably absent in institutional histories, women were vital to the development of the modern blockbuster exhibition.
