                            - The ability to use surface instabilities with functional material coatings to create a topo-optical sensor led to a £80k studentship at Northumbria funded by Changsha Jinghuazhongxin Hi-Tech Co’Ltd (contact: Zhong Cao jinghuazhongxintech@gmail.com) to develop next generation of paper based electronics technologies. As well as featuring in the online press e.g. EPSRC (https://epsrc.ukri.org/newsevents/news/researchers-discover-novel-optical-sensing-technology/), Materials World (https://www.iom3.org/materials-world-magazine/news/2020/jun/03/elastic-folding-soft-matter-surfaces-aids-highcontrast) and NECONNECTED (https://neconnected.co.uk/fold-to-glitter-researchers-discover-novel-optical-sensing-technology/), this output was part of the body of work for which Prof J. Kong received a NSFC Distinguished Young Scholar award (3M RMB Grant 52025034). Following publication, an invitation to present at the Society of Chemical Industry-CSCST Conference was received (2020, https://www.soci.org/events/chinese-uk-group/2020/27th-cscst-sci-annual-conference-sustainable-energy-and-manufacturing-the-future).
