                            - This paper represents the first use of 3D X-ray microtomography to study damage in unidirectional composites loaded in compression. Compression strength of UD plies is a fundamental property controlling the performance of composite structures, but the failure mechanisms are complex and usually studied using optical microscopy and SEM which relies on a 2D perspectives to interpret a 3D failure event. This paper presents 3D images to augment traditional approaches. This allows a more holistic view of the damage state revealing the importance of longitudinal splitting and the events facilitating local buckling and kinking.
