- This is the first full, academic study of this famous European collection, superseding Michaelis?s partial 1882 summary in Ancient Marbles in Great Britain. The 200,000-word, 600-photo monograph has been the author?s principal research project for 12 years. It puts the collection in context, presents detailed, revisionist detective-work on provenance, and fully documents 153 works still at Wilton, including both ancient and early modern sculptures. An appendix covers 197 ex-Wilton pieces. Besides library work, the research involved dozens of site visits to understand and document the objects? condition and physical history, and many days of archival research in several archives.
