- This chapter, written in French, investigates the staging of the Ancient Greek language in state-subsidized theatres in France and Germany between 1980 and 2008. Dramaturgical decisions about Greek dialogue can be used to emphasise either the familiarity or strangeness of the play’s setting in antiquity. Some French productions and translations confer an almost sacred power on Ancient Greek, venerating antiquity as a sacred object and distancing it from the present. German directors tend to represent the complexity of the translation process, while French directors tend to sacralise ancient culture.
