- The book explores in detail the Ciris intertextual engagement with the Greek and Roman poetic tradition from the seventh (Homer) to the first (Lucretius, Catullus) centuries BC. While previous research viewed it as a cento-like compilation from Latin texts (esp. Virgil), this analysis shows the Ciris to be an original and ambitious poem and supports a pre-Virgilian date of composition. The book also deepens scholarly understanding of ancient poetics and intertextuality in general. Besides covering a large body of pre-BC classical poetry, the book extensively engages with multilingual secondary literature on these sources.
