- This bilingual publication shows how French and German Jews jointly developed an early notion of 'connected histories' (Sanjay Subrahmanyam), based on transnational Jewish solidarity, international diplomatic networks and a long history of productive Jewish-Muslim relations, and how they used this concept to organise support for the Jews in Damascus, who, in 1840, were accused of ‘ritual murder’. The article also considers counter-trends among European Jews that emphasized detachment and distance, and it situates the Jewish public debate in the contexts of ongoing anti-Jewish hostility in Europe and the struggle for Jewish emancipation.
