                                - This monograph is based on 15 years of research in the library and the archives of the BFI. The book draws upon previously un- or under-examined primary sources, including nitrate prints unavailable to the public, the un-catalogued Denis Gifford Special Collection containing recordings of interviews with, and unpublished memoirs by, key Hepworth personnel, and a week by week search through the major trade publications of the period. The book offers an unparalleled industrial perspective on the workings of Britain’s most important film studio during a formative period, challenging perceived notions of the British film pioneers’ response to rapid industrial change.
