- Beyond a Joke is the product of four years’ research, involving extensive engagement with comedy theory, film aesthetics and reception history. As the first monograph to analyse English film and television parody, and in its coverage and length (85,000 words, 7 chapters), it is the field’s defining reference point. Its originality lies in its rethinking of traditional theories, exploring how parody in the English context negotiates a distinctive style and production mode within a global industry. It was shortlisted for the 2018 BAFTSS Best Monograph prize (winning Honourable Mention) and longlisted for the Kraszna-Kraus Best Moving Image Book award (2017).
