- Following the tragic fire, concerned local residents arranged to send contaminated samples to Prof Stec for analysis. Concerned by what she found, she undertook a thorough, independent study, finding alarming levels of PAH and other carcinogens. The story reached the press before peer-review was completed, and for a week it was daily front-page news in the Guardian. Prof Stec was contacted by Patrick Vallance, who had been instructed by the Prime Minister to establish a Scientific Advisory Group for Grenfell Contamination. As an expert to that group, alongside Prof Chris Witty, she ensured establishment of robust sampling and analysis.
