                            - This research was funded by AVL List GmBH, the world's largest independent company for the development, simulation and testing of powertrains. They offer the Excite-Piston package used by most major engine OEMs to predict the performance of piston-rings in i.c. engines. This software was based heavily on previous work at UCLan by a post-doc who now works for them. We demonstrated good agreement between the package’s predictions and our experiments. Some anomalies existed: cylinder out-of-roundness was found to be an issue, along with the rings’ abilities to conform to this. The package has now been developed to include these effects.
