- This monograph investigates the history and cultural meaning of the toga in considerable depth and detail, both in terms of chronology and scope. The theme is examined in a variety of contexts: gender identity, status, politics etc. The book is based on two years of research involving the collection and analysis of a large body of material collected in nine libraries in three countries, Some of the scholarly literature was widely dispersed, difficult to access, and in a range of languages. The resulting argument was dependent on the completion of a lengthy period of investigation of the collected source materials.
