                            - The paper presents key concepts and directions of the DISCUS project; a multidisciplinary long-reach PON based national network resilience project. The paper outlines the key directions of the project led to key results on networks for countries throughout Europe e.g. showing a much reduced core network for the UK to 70 nodes, BT has subsequently reduced to ~200 nodes. The paper and subsequent project results were presented at a standards forum directly influencing key standards for amplifiers in access e.g. ITU 984.6 https://tnc15.terena.org/getfile/1863. led to a new EPSRC research project UPON exploring ultimate capacity limits in amplified access (£775k,  https://gow.epsrc.ukri.org/NGBOViewGrant.aspx?GrantRef=EP/M005283/1)
