- This very long volume represents the culmination of a long-term and large research programme, the excavations at Dichin (1996-2002) involving 180+ staff and subsequent years of data analysis by research specialists. The author led the research programme, the excavations, the data analysis and the editorial process of the book, translated the Bulgarian excavation reports, and wrote the central chapters of the book. His own chapters are substantial in themselves, and the rest of the book has been informed and structured by his interventions throughout.
