                            - The new rigorous analysis of the thermodynamics and kinetics of syntrophic acetate oxidation and its role in improving high-ammonia biogas processes forms part of a successful European Research Council starting grant (SYNAG, ID: 948138, €993k) to stabilise biogas reactors for greater efficiency. As highlighted by others (https://doi.org/10.1016/j.watres.2020.116774), the unexpected experimental finding that the methanogens appropriate the majority of the energy available from this syntrophic process over-turns the long-held belief that the organisms involved in syntrophy share energy equally.
